September 30, 2024

The National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, National Reconciliation will host a “Shelter Management Training Workshop” from October 2nd to 4th 2024.

The workshop, being coordinated by NEMO and the United States Agency for International Development/Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (USAID/BHA), would be held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Conference Room, Financial Complex, Kingstown.

Within recent times, St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) has experienced the effects of several climatic hazards which have disrupted the normal functioning of society. This is evident following the impact of Hurricane Beryl in July this year, which devastated SVG, with the Southern Grenadines receiving the brunt of the impact.

NEMO is therefore working collaboratively with USAID/BHA to equip shelter volunteers with the requisite skills, to ensure there is improved capacity to manage emergency shelters when they are activated.

The objectives of the training include:

  • Principles governing the management of an emergency shelter
  • Roles and responsibilities of shelter management teams and Shelterees
  • Use of the various record keeping forms
  • Psychosocial support during shelter activation
  • Child protection in emergencies
  • Return to happiness and,
  • Infection prevention and control in shelters.

Participants in the workshop would include thirty shelter volunteers who were actively engaged in managing the emergency shelters, and five (5) members of the Shelter Working Group.

This training was previously scheduled for July 16th to 18th 2024, but was rescheduled due to impact of Hurricane Beryl.

The three day - “Shelter Management Training Workshop” would run from 8:30 am to 3:30pm daily, starting on Wednesday October 2nd, 2024.
